Each year thousands of people in Oregon will become disabled. They may have suffered an injury or become too ill to continue working and earning an income. In order to begin receiving benefits you need to file an application or claim with the Social Security Administration. You’ll see two acronyms, SSD and SSI and wonder what the difference is and which you should file.
SSD stands for Social Security Disability and is paid for out of the FICA taxes deducted from your paycheck. There is no income level or financial restrictions, meaning you can get SSD benefits even if you own your home and your spouse has an income. The benefits are anywhere from almost nothing to a maximum of about $2300 depending on how much you earned and paid into the system. SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income and is a welfare program for disabled people. It is open to anyone, even those who did not work, however the payouts are lower than SSD. The maximum is about $674 a month and you can lose this or have it reduce if you earn a part time income that exceeds the limit. The rules can be quite complex which is why many consult with an experienced social security disability attorney when filing a claim for SSI benefits.
The Dalles, Oregon Disability Benefits
Although Lewis and Clark camped in the region and called it Quenett, The Dalles received its distinct name from a group of French Canadian fur trappers traveling in the region in the 19th century. Seeing the basalt formations on the narrows of the Columbia River reminded the men of flagstones which in the French language is Dalle. The area was at first called La Grande Dalle de la Columbia and the name Dalles began to be used in 1814. Although officially named Dalles City, most people and the post office call the city The Dalles. A short time later a Methodist Mission was started in the town and brought in a number of new residents. As the endpoint of a land route and the last section of the Oregon Trail, the area continued to grow through the 19th century. For a time The Dalles was the site of a US Mint where gold from Canyon City was turned into coins. However the gold ran out and the mint eventually closed. Today the mint has become a popular winery, the Erin Glenn Winery.
The Dalles continued to grow and expand as it moved through the 20th century. The Dalles Dam was constructed in 1957 and provided many jobs to the people in the city as well as nearby communities including Mosier and Dufur. In 1970 the Celio Convertor Station was opened by the Bonneville Power Administration. This operation is still in use and sends over 3000 megawatts of electricity to the city of Los Angeles, California. The area has a natural scenic beauty that draws tourists and filmmakers, and the movie Penalty Phase was filmed in The Dalles. In recent years the region has become the spot for new technology companies. Google began building a data center called Project 02 in The Dalles. The site was chosen because the Columbia River offered the company a source of reliable hydroelectric power. The project has two massive buildings, each the size of a football field, and two cooling plants, both four stories tall. Hundreds of area residents worked on the construction of the complex and many are workong in the data center since its completion in 2006. Unfortunately, some residents who have worked in the area for years are now forced to leave their jobs because of a disability. If you cannot work and need help filing a claim for SSI or SSD benefits, there are skilled attorneys in and around The Dalles. They can review your medical and occupational histories and help you get approved for benefits.
