Each year thousands of Oregon residents will apply for Social Security disability benefits. If you are ready to submit a SSI or SSDI application and claim, there are several ways to apply. The first way is to go to your local SSA office. This is a good choice if you want to talk to a Social Security representative in person. If you go to an office you may want to go either early in the day or later in the afternoon to avoid the longest lines. Another option is to call the SSA’s toll free number. The operator will set up a telephone appointment with a SSA representative for you, who will help you with your application. This is a good choice if you have difficulty traveling do to your disability.

One of the new options is applying for benefits over the internet at the Social Security website, www.ssa.gov.  This choice is good if you are comfortable using a computer. You can submit your paperwork right online and the process is faster than applying in person or over the phone.  The final way to apply for SSI/SSD benefits is with a social security disability attorney. They will review your medical history and help you assemble all required paperwork. A disability lawyer will make sure that your application and claim is correct and complete the first time. Many people find that working with a SSI/SSD attorney increase their chances for being approved and often at a higher compensation level.

Portland, Oregon Disability Benefits
Portland owes its beginnings and its name to 25 cents and a coin toss. In 1843 William Overton came to the region and saw that the area had a lot of potential as a commercial center. Unfortunately, Overton was not a rich man and did not have the funds to claim the land. He made a deal with his partner back in Boston, Asa Lovejoy.  Overton would share his 640 acre claim with Lovejoy for 25 cents if he would help with the funding. Later Overton sold his share to Francis Pettygrove of Portland, Maine. The two owners, Lovejoy and Pettygrove each wanted to name the new region after their home towns. They agreed to use a coin toss to decide between Boston and Portland, and Pettygrove won in two out of three tosses. The coin was saved and is displayed at the Oregon Historical Society. Portland was incorporated in 1851 and grew quickly to more than 17,000 residents by 1879. The city was the already the business center of the region and had a variety of industries including agriculture, fishing, logging, and commerce.

Today Portland is the largest city in Oregon and one of the largest in the country. It has a wide array of business, educational, and cultural ventures and remains the vital center of the region. Portland’s location is a big reason why it has seen so much growth and continues to be so successful. Many businesses start here, or relocate, to take advantage of the low energy costs, natural resources, and the multiple transportation modes including an international airport, marine shipping facilities, interstate highways, and intercontinental railroads. In recent years Portland has become a leader in environmentally friendly green technology companies. The area is also a popular destination for business and vacation travelers, creating a strong tourism industry. There are many opportunities for employment and business in Portland and nearby communities including Marylhurst, Lake Oswego, and Happy Valley. However some residents cannot take advantage of these opportunities because they have become disabled. If you cannot work there are disability attorneys in Portland and the surrounding region who can help you get approved for SSI/SSD benefits.
