Each year many people in the state of Washington will become disabled. They may have suffered an injury or become too ill to continue working and earning an income. In order to begin receiving benefits you need to file an application or claim with the Social Security Administration. You’ll see two acronyms, SSD and SSI and wonder what the difference is and which you should file.
SSD stands for Social Security Disability and is paid for out of the FICA taxes deducted from your paycheck. There is no income level or financial restrictions, meaning you can get SSD benefits even if you own your home and your spouse has an income. The benefits are anywhere from almost nothing to a maximum of about $2300 depending on how much you earned and paid into the system. SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income and is a welfare program for disabled people. It is open to anyone, even those who did not work, however the payouts are lower than SSD. The maximum is about $674 a month and you can lose this or have it reduce if you earn a part time income that exceeds the limit. The rules can be quite complex which is why many consult with an experienced social security disability attorney when filing a claim for SSI benefits.
Seattle, Washington Disability Benefits
The area that is modern day Seattle had been inhabited for at least four thousand years. Native American people were the main inhabitants with the primary group being the Duwamish Tribe. The city is named for the leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish people, Chief Seattle, and the name Seattle appears on the first official plat papers filed in 1853. The first major industry in Seattle was timber and the logging business. During this time a road in the town was called Skid Road, and referred to the loggers sliding timber down the road to the Yesler’s Sawmill below. Today the road is known as Yesler’s Way. Towards the end of the 19th century gold was discovered in Alaska and the Yukon setting off the Klondike Gold Rush. The rush brought more residents through the area as Seattle was the main supply point and transport route to the northern areas. The people of Seattle found success in feeding and clothing the would-be minors passing through. The rush would last into the 20th century and many of today’s well-known companies were started during this era including Nordstrom, Eddie Bauer, and the American Messenger Company, now known as UPS.
Today Seattle is the largest city in the state of Washington and the economic, cultural and educational center of the entire region. The city has many modes of transportation including rail lines, the Port of Seattle and harbors, and an international airport, Sea-Tac. These are used to transport goods and products around the world and for business and recreational travel. The city’s economic base has a variety of sectors such as technology, financial services, manufacturing, retail and commerce, healthcare, and service based businesses. It is considered one of the best places to start a company and is especially popular with companies dedicated to environmentally friendly products and services, often called clean and green technologies. There are all kinds of employment opportunities in and around Seattle but some in the region cannot take advantage of the opportunities due to a serious illness or injury. If you are disabled there are skilled attorneys in Seattle and surrounding communities such as Shoreline, Tukwila, and Mercer Island who can help you file a successful claim for Social Security disability benefits.
