Vernon would eventually have three milk processing plants, earning it the nickname of Milk City. In the decade between 1950 and 1960 the city built the Skagit Valley Hospital due in a large part to a group of citizens and the Women’s Guild who worked for years to raise funds for the institution. The hospital provided a wide range of jobs for medical professionals, support staff, and administrators. Several shopping districts and malls were created and many of the former farms were developed into residential and commercial zones, providing work for those in the construction and building trades.
