Thousands of people every year become unable to work because of an illness or injury. Their medical condition may be only temporary and they can recover and work again in a few years, or it may be a permanent disability. While many people may suffer from the same condition, not everyone has their SSDI or SSI application for disability benefits approved. Many younger workers who are disabled are worried that they cannot get benefits because of their age, yet they may need the financial help to support their family.
The reality is that age does matter when it comes to being approved for Social Security disability benefits. The basic rule is the older you are, the less disabled you have to be. The reason is that the SSA feels that younger workers, generally under the age of fifty, can be retrained in a new occupation. For example, a person working in shipping or distribution who suffers a back injury and can no longer lift significant weight can be retrained to do sedentary work such as entering information in a computer data base. However, there are younger workers who cannot work any job due to their medical or mental condition. They need to consult with an experienced disability attorney who can review their medical, occupational, and educational history and see if they can file a successful claim for disability benefits.
Mt. Vernon, Washington Disability Benefits
The first eastern settlers of the region that is now Mt. Vernon were Joseph Dwelley and Jasper Gates who set up a homestead next to the Skagit River in 1870. Seven years later teacher Harrison Clothier and E.G. English came to the region to teach and form a business, and they are considered the founders of Mt. Vernon, named for the home of the leader and first president, George Washington. One of the first major businesses was logging, and camps were set up for the workers who were building the city. Mt. Vernon grew quickly with businessmen setting up shops, saloons, and hotels. The city was chosen as the county seat in 1884 and officially incorporated in 1893. Early leaders realized that Mt. Vernon needed a railroad to connect it with other cities and markets and formed a group to lobby railroad companies. The group was successful and the Great Northern Railway agreed to come to Mt. Vernon and connect it with Everett, Seattle, and Vancouver, BC. The railroad accelerated the growth of Mt. Vernon and hundreds of new residents and businesses moved to the city.
Mt. Vernon continued to diversify its economic base through the years. As many logging operations moved eastward toward the denser forests, dairy farms became the major industry in the city. Mt. Vernon would eventually have three milk processing plants, earning it the nickname of Milk City. In the decade between 1950 and 1960 the city built the Skagit Valley Hospital due in a large part to a group of citizens and the Women’s Guild who worked for years to raise funds for the institution. The hospital provided a wide range of jobs for medical professionals, support staff, and administrators. Several shopping districts and malls were created and many of the former farms were developed into residential and commercial zones, providing work for those in the construction and building trades. Mt. Vernon continues to grow and was recognized in 1998 as the “Best Small Town in America.” However, even with the wide variety of employment opportunity some people in the region are unable to handle the stress and demands of a fulltime job due to a disability. If you need assistance getting approved for SSI/SSD benefits there are skilled attorneys in Mt Vernon and nearby communities including Burlington, Clear Lake, and Sedro Woolley who can help you prepare and file your claim with the SSA.
